Il significato è evidente fin dalla prima strofa Roxanne / You don’t have to put on the red light / Those days are over / You don’t have to sell your body to the night. Non è chiaro però se lei sia d’accordo perchè I know my mind is made up / So put away your make up / Told you once I won’t tell you again / It’s a bad way suona quasi come un’imposizione se non un ultimatum.

Roxanne è il primo estratto da Outlandos d’Amour, album del 1978 dei The Police, il loro primo.
