Losing My Religion letteralmente significa perdere la religione ma nel sud degli Stati Uniti è un’espressione utilizzata per dire perdere la ragione o perdere la pazienza. Secondo quanto dichiarato da Michael Stipe la canzone si ispira a “Every Breath You Take” dei Police.

Rolling Stone magazine la piazza alla posizione 170 della sua classifica delle canzoni più belle di sempre.

Il video ufficiale fu diretto da Tarsem Singh e fu nominato Video dell’anno agli MTV Video Music Awards del 1991.
